Kidding season starts here at the Farm during the first week of August 2010. Gestation is 5 month. The first to be bred by "Cappy" was Gilly Goat but she seems to be carrying triplets so her cooking time is long. There are 8 other girls that will be ahead of her.
Last kidding season we started the name the baby goat contest and it turned out to be quite a bit of fun and everyone gave me some awesome names.
Naturally a contest has to have a prize so I decided to give the winner their choice of one of my published books and I would sign them along with a mention of the Baby goat.
Last season many followed the labor of Bloomers and even the birthing on Twitter. Late night folks helped me stay awake during the {{BLOOMERS ALERT}}. With out these wonderful folks, I might have fallen asleep and one could have gotten stuck and died, so I thank you one and all.
It is custom at our farm that once a goat receives a name, it is staying at the farm or sold as an Future Farmers of America, 4-H project or as a breeder so the name is extremely important. We take pride in our breeding stock and it is an honor for me to have one of my friends give the doe or buckling a name.
The date and time for the naming contest will be announced on Twitter and Face-book. It is to be a live cast so watch carefully for the announcements.
This is how the naming works. Each kid that is born has to have a name beginning with the same letter as their dam. Ex: Bloomers had 2 girls, Bloomette and Brina. If it is decided that a boy will stay, it's different since he will have to have a regal name. Pete and I will pick the best of our breeding season for the naming contest but you can watch as all of them come into this world and enjoy the baby goats.
I'm on F B as Marty Rightmyer, you are more then welcomed to come join me and look at the albums of all of the babies as they are born and watch for the { Goat Alerts }
Our judges are not on Twitter or Face Book. They are our cattlemen neighbors that really don't like goats but they are incredible folks and love the contest.
Here is a list of the does that will be having labor pains soon. Remember one may not be picked but you can never tell which one will be chosen for the naming contest until the time is right.
Blackberry, Rose Bud, Gilly, Wild Thing, Blondie, Burdock are just a few to get started with. You can go to the PRF Boer Goat page on the right to look at them or the photo album in Face Book. Keep in mind that "Cappy" was the sire to all of the does. It may help you figure out a cool name.

Thank You and Enjoy.
